Ideally I am supposed to fly out to Chicago this evening (12/5/2018) But I have a cold. Yes the common cold has become the barrier to my leaving.
Chemotherapy is not done when you have a cold since it could potentially mean any number of infections. I have been given one extra day so we can reassess tomorrow to see how I am feeling and if all is good I can go to Chicago and all will be right with the world. If not, then my treatment will be postponed a whole month, because there are no more dates in December. Because Christmas.
I am trying to get a test done that will check for infections (called RVP), but since Austin is a ‘Small’ city, I am having trouble finding labs here that will give me results in a day. I will update this page with what actually transpires soon. But for now, I just get to wait to feel better for another day.
Dear Smitha,
We can truly relate to what you might be going through now. This same thing happened to us as well. On the day Vishal was getting admitted to hospital for his transplant, he fell sick with cold. We called his doctors team to inform about his situation and left them a message, 10 minutes after that we get a call from his doctor informing us that Vishal’s donor has also fallen sick. We were heartbroken hearing this, because now they were not sure of continuing with the same donor (because the donor may have some antibodies that might affect the transplant process) . Vishal’s transplant team started looking for another donor. But one month later, the same donor came back after recovering (She did have some antibodies in his blood, which was filtered very diligently by the transplant team at Stanford) and everything went as planned.
Keep hope and focus on getting better and stronger for Day 0.
Lots of love,
Reshma & Vishal

Thank you reshma. It is disappointing but it’s probably safer to not have chemo make me more immuno-compromised than I already am. So happy that vishal got his transplant in the end. I’m hoping for one such happy ending for me too.
